J-Pop America Funtime Now!

jpop

We recently received a box of Japanese candy here at GG headquarters, and it reminded me of “J-Pop America Funtime Now!”—the Saturday Night Live parody of Japanese pop culture (as interpreted by a pair of superficial American teens).

In the collage pictured above, the candy box is on the left, with two scenes from J-Pop to the right.

From a linguistic perspective, the candy box baffles me. In addition to the Japanese script, it also has some things written in the Latin alphabet, though I’m not sure what language “Lotte” and “Toppa” is. Or what the English phrase “School of Lock!” means.

Whatever… I have a name for this garish style of graphic design: Clown Vomit.
